“Stephen suggests that by eating endangered animals we can prevent their extinction.”

Amazingly, antis use this same argument to defend their meals of BBQ and fried chicken. Because, like, if no one cared enough to eat cows and chicks, they’d go extinct. So it’s really a philanthropic vs. a convenience thing. Seriously. You cannot make this shit up.

Big Bush vs. the Clam-Hugging Hippie Vegans

Filed under: Fluffy Stuff, Video Blogging — Kelly @ July 25, 2007 10:58 pm

So I finally got around to watching the first few episodes of Lil’ Bush yesterday (now that the season’s over - how’s that for procrastination?), and it’s actually funny. The commercials just didn’t do it justice, I guess. I especially got a kick out of this clip.

Clam-hugging vegan goodness at the 36s mark.

There must be a veg*n on the writing staff. * (Oh, I hope there’s a veg*n on the writing staff!)

* Reason being, I’d expect ‘em to use the term “vegetarian” over “vegan” 9 out of 10 times…do most people even know what a vegan is?

I mean, fuck, they’re still referring to the Church’s child prey as “alleged victims.” As if there’s any iota of doubt. Pffffft.

Impeach the fuckers.

Today is Blog for Impeachment Day! Can I get a w00t w00t?!

Via AliceDem at Booman Tribute (by way of Feministe):

On July 14, 1789 a mob of French patriots stormed the Bastille prison. It was proof that power no longer resided in the King.

On July 14, 2007 a group of bloggers from all across America will be blogging for impeachment. We invite all patriots to join us.

Bruce Godfrey, who so graciously hosted the celebrated Take Back the Blog event, has once again offered his services as a host.

We hope by this action we can demonstrate the widespread support for impeachment and shift the debate. We also hope to educate our political elite on the dangers posed by failing to impeach.

It is critically important for the future of our democracy that this criminal cabal and all of their works be repudiated. We ask for your support and participation.

Though Bruce’s announcement primarily asks for

arguments and posts that make the case for impeachment proceedings, for a vote of impeachment or for a removal after trial of any impeachable federal office holder. However, this blogswarm will happily accept well-written anti-impeachment (or pro-impeachment, of course) posts from any member of the Maryland Bloggers Alliance as noted at the blogroll on the left sidebar, or from liberal/civil libertarian bloggers offering a principled, political or practical case for opposition to impeachment from that perspective. Academic scholarship on impeachment would be MOST welcome to contribute to the debate for all involved.

this featherhead’s legal expertise is nascent at best. If the whole of the Bush presidency doesn’t constitute impeachable offenses, I don’t know what does. (Sentencing 68,000 women to death annually because they had the temerity to have teh sex? Check. Slaughtering 974,000 Iraqis to stroke daddy’s ego? Check. Thumbing your nose at the Constitution? Check, check, and check.) And that’s really the bulk of my argument - call it the “WTF!?%$#” line of reasoning. If Clinton’s hummer was enough to get him nearly-impeached, then Bush (and Cheney and Rove and Gonzalez) ought to be strung up in the public square by their elephantitic nutsacks. Common sense and human decency, people.

Anyway, in lieu of an “academic” “legal” “argument”, I come bearing a big fat link roundup of impeach-the-fucker resources. Hope y’all will let me in on the party, even if all I have to offer is the warm shit beer.

On that note, do check in with Bruce to read the more, ahem, mature impeachment posts.

Crazy impeachment goodness after the flip. It’s like a librrrl’s wet dream down there.

Friday Veggie Vlogging (”My Retro Boyfriend” ed.)

Filed under: Animals, Video Blogging — Kelly @ July 13, 2007 3:18 pm

w00t. Two weeks in a row. Must be on a roll or something.

This week’s pick was inspired by a recent post on Pandagon, wherein “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” was chosen as one of the three worst Beatles songs penned by John Lennon, My Retro Boyfriend ™. Naturally, I disagree. Wholeheartedly.

According to the song’s Wiki entry (everything has a Wiki entry nowadays, don’t it?),

This song mocks the actions of a young American named Richard A. Cooke III, known as Rik [sic] who was visiting his mother, Nancy Cooke de Herrera, at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh at the same time that the Beatles were staying with the Maharishi. […] According to Nancy’s life account, Beyond Gurus, the genesis of the song occurred when she, Rik, and several others, including native guides, set out upon elephants to hunt for a tiger (allegedly presented by their Indian guide as a traditional act). The pack of elephants was attacked by a tiger, which was shot by Rik. Rik was initially proud of his quick reaction and posed for a photograph with his prize. However, Rik’s reaction to the slaying was mixed, as he has not hunted since. Nancy claims that all present recognised the necessity of Rik’s action, but that John Lennon’s reaction was scornful and sarcastic, asking Rik: “But wouldn’t you call that slightly life-destructive?” The song was written by Lennon as mocking what he saw as Rik’s bravado and unenlightened attitude.

Lennon later told his version of the story in a Playboy interview, stating that: “[Bungalow Bill] was written about a guy in Maharishi’s meditation camp who took a short break to go shoot a few poor tigers, and then came back to commune with God. There used to be a character called Jungle Jim, and I combined him with Buffalo Bill. It’s sort of a teenage social-comment song and a bit of a joke.”

Swoon.

And I think this goes without saying, but…not an official Beatles vid. Love it nonetheless. Wonder if any of the actors are veg*n?

All that “global” “warming” “hype”

If Home Depot is serious about protecting the environment, they must stop advertising on Fox — a network that consistently spreads misinformation about and denies the existence of global warming….

Mama needs a new backyard!

Filed under: The Environment, Calls to Action, Food & Drink — Kelly @ July 9, 2007 6:33 pm

Via New American Dream:

In every month from July through December, New American Dream’s Carbon Conscious Consumer campaign will focus on one easy, habit-forming step Americans can take to help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. For July we’re focusing on eating locally. Did you know that food in the U.S. typically travels more than 1500 miles and generates five to 17 times more carbon emissions than food grown locally?

If you pledge to eat at least one pound of local food each week – and invite your friends to do the same – we’ll show you the positive impact of your action and give you a shot at some great prizes, including a $6000 eco-makeover for your yard!

Click on the logo below to pledge to purchase an lb. of locally-grown food this month (and increase your blegger’s chances of winning a newly revamped backyard to go with her newly purchased first (!) home!- don’t worry, I promise to freecycle all that unwanted foliage):

My weiner dog thanks you.

Friday Veggie Vlogging (”You are what you eat” ed.)

Filed under: Animals, Video Blogging — Kelly @ July 6, 2007 11:09 am

So I’m sitting here, plugging away at my html and junk (my day job), and this song popped up in the music queue. So came my Brilliant Idea of the Week: Friday Veggie Vlogging. Every Friday weekend*, a new veggie-themed music vid. As a bonus, I’ll also take bets on how long this Brilliant Idea will last, and what will bring about its downfall - lack of time on my part, or lack of veggie-themed music vids on You Tube’s end?**

* The more wiggle room I give myself, the better. Remember the Friday Carnival Roundups of days past?

** Consider this a solicitation for suggestions!

(Crossposted from my veg blog. Just because.)
