UPDATE, 11/04/07:

As of mid-October, I’ve moved my blog from www.kellygarbato.com/blog/ to www.smiteme.net. For the time being, I will continue to crosspost all Natural Disaster alerts on both the Katrina Alerts section of KellyGarbato.com, as well as on the new (!) Disaster Relief section of SmiteMe.net. Eventually, however, I will remove these pages and redirect the URLs to SmiteMe.net.

So, please - update your bookmarks sooner rather than later!:

——————————————————————————-

Hurricane Katrina has killed hundreds of people and left hundreds of thousands without homes. While my heart goes out to Katrina’s victims, the hurricane’s aftermath has been most keenly felt by the tens of thousands of animals left behind. While humans were evacuated - albeit not soon enough - animals were, and are still being, denied safe passage.

Even though the degree of suffering is simply overwhelming, you can help. There’s an urgent need for donations of money, supplies, and time. Whether you choose to make your donation to a human-centered charity or one that works exclusively with animals, please just give.

Below are a list of resources for those who would like to fund or volunteer for animal rescue efforts. The AR organization Kinship Circle is on top of things, with almost-daily email alerts, archived below.

I have also compiled a list of useful resources: http://www.kellygarbato.com/katrina/klinks. This includes a list of local and national groups that are desperately in need of donations.

Whatever you do, go give your furry (and bald!) friends a sloppy wet kiss right now (seriously, go do it, I’ll be here when you get back!). Let them know how much you adore them while you can.

- Kelly

1. News From ARNO

SOURCE: Charlotte Bass, table25 [at] bellsouth.net

ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS

4,000 in the last 20 months: That’s every animal spay/neutered, heartworm and veterinary treated…so each leaves our shelter as healthy as possible. Even feral cats are treated for wounds, upper respiratory infections, etc.

Kinship Circle - 2007-12-27 - Rebuilding Lives In New Orleans

Bonaparte was flown to his new home in California this fall. Caring people from around North America (including Canada) adopt ARNO pets. Our home visits are accomplished through rescue partners in the adopting cities.

2. ARNO Shelter Undergoes A Makeover!

ARNO Warehouse, 271 Plauche St., New Orleans, LA 70123

Everyone is excited about a major “makeover” for ARNO’s Plauche St. shelter. Our front office complex now has a clean, hospital-like appearance and cat breezeway areas are reconfigured. Modern shelter protocols for disinfecting and housing are underway. While ARNO’s inoculation protocols already meet contemporary shelter medicine protocols, our entire operation will now function at peak protocols for cleaning and disinfecting.

ARNO’s new daily shelter hours from 3:00pm to 7:00pm give animal care volunteers less interruption during the first part of the day. The roughly $3,000 makeover is funded from a slim checkbook… Since August, we’ve run an in-house lab to read fecals, conduct our own parvo tests, and more. ARNO trains volunteers to evaluate these slides, under the guidance of Ohio State University volunteer vet students. An on-site lab not only saves money, but also relieves labor, time and stress to animals from transport to clinics.

3. Moratorium And Ongoing Need For Volunteers

VOLUNTEER FOR ARNO:
www.animalrescueneworleans.org/volunteer.html
504-571-1900, ar-no [at] cox.net

ARNO, an all-volunteer organization, needs helping hands constantly. We recently placed a temporary moratorium on intake and trapping — until our shelter population is reduced to manageable numbers through concentrated adoption efforts, transfers, etc. Though grateful for our strong, small core of regular volunteers, ARNO has operated in emergency mode for two years…15-hour days, seven days a week.

OUT-OF-TOWN VOLUNTEERS are still needed. In fact, since resident-fun ARNO’s inception, out-of-town volunteers have been our lifesavers — particularly when just two or three regulars are caretakers to approximately 250 animals!

A reduced shelter population and refurbished environment will ultimately attract more volunteers and let us focus on jobs beyond daily animal care, such as adoption drives and enhanced relationships with humane organizations that result in adoption transfers and other coordinated endeavors.

4. We Need Your Help To Keep Going…

ARNO’S WISHLIST: www.animalrescueneworleans.org/donate.html

Monetary donations are essential to ARNO’s survival…but not everyone can afford this. Still, you can help by cross-posting our wish list needs to raise awareness about ARNO’s work post-Katrina to the present.

Donated pet food from manufacturers is scarce…and we have to drum-up funds for transport when available. One load may cost $4000 - $2800, depending upon its geographic origin. This money covers fuel and fuel surcharges. Driver and truck are supplied via our volunteer trucking agent, FreeHaulNPC.

Donated food is mandatory for shelter animals AND homeless animals roaming streets in barely (or not at all) repopulated areas with depleted food/garbage sources to forage.

During the holidays and beyond, perhaps you can host a get-together, asking guests to bring a check for ARNO instead of a hostess gift. Or, hold a birthday party for your dog (or you) and do the same instead of gifts.

Many people nationwide have held fundraisers for ARNO with incredible results — from social gatherings in the Hamptons to Sweet 16 parties. Kindergartener and first-graders have raised hundreds of dollars through “Collect Your Coins” drives. Let us know if you can help raise funds for ARNO and we’ll send you bookmark/brochures to hand out at your event.

DONATE TO ARNO:
1. ONLINE: www.animalrescueneworleans.org/donate.html
2. MAIL: Animal Rescue New Orleans, 1219 Coliseum Street, New Orleans, LA 70130
3. PETSMART GIFT CARDS: www.petsmart.com
4. PETCO GIFT CARDS: www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?R=462&sku=948675&Nav=14
5. SUPPLIES: Ship/Drop Off - ARNO Warehouse, 271 Plauche St., New Orleans, LA 70123

5. Sponsor A Pet Through “Spot’s Fund”

Meet Spot, a wonderful dog shot and left to die in New Orleans East:
www.animalrescueneworleans.org

Spot’s Fund is a permanent fund for donors to sponsor a pet who needs extraordinary care. Donations to Spot’s Fund directly cover costs associated with Spot’s surgery, medical treatment and rehabilitation. Any additional funds are earmarked to help us save the lives of other animals, who like Spot, have no options without ARNO… Animals like Aubrey, the pitiful sarcoptic mange dog who needed long-term treatment and removal of tumors.

If you can help financially, even with a small donation, please consider donating now using our PayPal link on our homepage. Happy Holidays to you all… and bless you for helping the animals in any way you can.

Kinship Circle - 2007-12-27 - Rebuilding Lives In New Orleans (Spot)

UPDATE ON SPOT!

Spot has been adopted by a veterinary medicine student from Ohio State University and went home with her for Christmas! We are thrilled Spot is probably one of the sweetest dogs we have had at our shelter (course you know we say that about all of them!) He is beautiful, intelligent, loving and super sweet! This is the best Christmas present ARNO could ever get…

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

6. Pet Retention Program

More than two years after Katrina, citizen still struggle daily…

…if not physically, at a minimum, emotionally. ARNO strives to work with those left indigent after the storms by fulfilling medical needs for their pets. Our goal is to prevent surrender to overcrowded municipal shelters where adoption rates are low.

We salute volunteers assigned to Katrina-affected people. They’ve become “family,” assisting with grocery purchases, finding lost relatives to help, and even moving dogs to new homes via volunteer transport. Please support ARNO so we may continue to aid the human and animal survivors of Katrina.

DONATE: www.animalrescueneworleans.org/donate.html

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

7. Kudos To Brad Pitt And Steven Bing For Helping New Orleans!

An art installation in the Lower 9th Ward, crafted in pink fabric, depicts homes in varying degrees of “dismemberment” after Katrina. Some of dwellings are lit from within, with a light to represent each person who died there. The effect is beautiful, chilling and touching…and worth seeing. To learn more about this “green project” portrayed in pink, visit: www.makeitrightnola.org

New Orleans is still rebuilding, with much left to do. We remain thankful to all who contribute their support, money and sweat toward rejuvenating this one-of-a-kind, nowhere-else-in-the-world city. She’s worth every effort!

Katrina’s effects, more than two years later, are still seen in the faces of scared, lonely strays or surrenders who populate overcrowded shelters. Adoptions are few and far between…while surrenders increase because people don’t have the means to care for their own animals.

“The best way anyone can help us is to send PetSmart or Wal-Mart gift cards. Shipment of food is also welcomed, but I have limited space. There hasn’t been food at ARNO for the street animals for months. Every single bag of food is purchased with our own money.

FOSTER & FOREVER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED!
Many adult cats have been forgotten and still live on the streets of Lakeview since Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, very young kittens live in devastated areas of Lakeview. Our urgent need at this time: Locate homes or fosters for friendly cats/kittens on Lakeview’s streets AND find people to socialize not so friendly cats/kittens.

Recently two friendly adult cats are finally safe after taken off the streets in Lakeview. Twinkie had an abscess on her head and went to ARNO for vetting and treatment. Healed, she waits at ARNO for a forever home…

Old Red’s owner was located but she couldn’t bring him into her current living situation. Just this week, Old Red was taken off the street and adopted by a former Lakeview resident that now lives outside of Baton Rouge.

Three adorable juvenile kittens were trapped under the slab of a house on Bellaire and taken to ARNO. They have been socialized and are now in a foster home waiting for their forever home.

3. 2007 Numbers, From Animal Rescue New Orleans

ANIMAL RESCUE NEW ORLEANS (ARNO)
www.animalrescueneworleans.org
Lise McComiskey, lmccomiskey [at] shergarner.com

During the year of 2006, ARNO took in 2,292 animals saved nearly 2,292 animals (euthanizing less than 5 animals for severe illness/disease/trauma). ARNO’s expenses for the year of 2007 came to a total of $224,517.72.

ARNO received $175,354.58 in donations and income and HSUS paid $65,020.00 to veterinarians on ARNO’s behalf during the year of 2006.

LOUISIANA SPCA

LA/SPCA took in 4,008 animals in the year 2006 and saved 1,884 animals (euthanizing 2,124 animals).

LA/SPCA completed its $8 million dollar phase one shelter. Additionally, LA/SPCA will build phases two and three of their new facility, a veterinary clinic to be included, with all but $1.9 million of the additional $9.9 million in donations and funding they have received. Finally, LA/SPCA is the sole agency contracted by the City of New Orleans, at nearly $2 million annually, charged with the responsibility of animal control.

JEFFERSON PARISH SHELTER AUTHORITY

The Eastbank and Westbank shelters took in nearly 14,000 animals in the year of 2006 and while 4,340 animals were saved, nearly 9,660 animals were euthanized during that one year.

Although operating expenses and funding/donations are not known, the JPSA was given $1 million dollars to upgrade the shelters, both of which badly needed the improvements.

4. Spot And The Shot Heard Round The World (Or At Least By ARNO)

SOURCE: Charlotte Bass, table25 [at] bellsouth.net

One can only imagine what Spot, a rambunctious 11-month puppy, suffered after he was shot near midnight on Dec. 7, 2007 in New Orleans East, an area still devastated more than two years after Katrina. Why did the security guard who shot him (due to an admitted fear of dogs) leave Spot to slowly die? We may not have answers, but we do have Spot — the newest resident at Animal Rescue New Orleans’ no-kill shelter in Harahan, Louisiana.

Kinship Circle - 2007-12-22 - Katrina's Lingering Impact 05

Spot lay bleeding for at least 8 hours before found and rushed to a veterinary clinic where he was stabilized with fluids and pain meds. Spot faced costly surgery to amputate his right front leg. The other option was euthanasia. A kind clinic employee stepped in to adopt Spot, once his former caretakers determined they didn’t want the burden of bills or a three-legged dog. Spot’s new caretaker searched for anyone willing to help Spot.

Many closed doors later, Spot’s guardian angel wound up on ARNO’s front step. ARNO had no funds or space, but wanted to give Spot a second chance at life. Spot’s Fund was created through the collaborative efforts of one caring person and ARNO. As Spot’s story circulated, donations poured into Spot’s Fund. It seems a gunned-down dog left to die opened many hearts…

Spot’s home at ARNO is filled with love and attentive care as he adjusts to life on three legs. ARNO will ensure Spot’s adoption into a loving forever home…and with your help, ARNO will help the next Spot who comes along! Learn about ARNO’s life-saving work: www.animalrescueneworleans.org

Kinship Circle - 2007-12-22 - Katrina's Lingering Impact 12

KINSHIP CIRCLE: I was honored to meet An American Opera director Tom McPhee, and participate on the discussion panel following the film’s screening at the 16th St. Louis International Film Festival. An American Opera has been awarded the Gold Camera Award at the 2007 U.S. International Film and Video Festival; the Gold Remi Award at the 2007 WorldFest Houston; and the Jury Award for Best Feature Documentary at the Sacramento Film & Music Festival 2007 as well as awards at Park City and ReelheART in Toronto.

WATCH AN AMERICAN OPERA TEASER & OTHER EXCERPTS:
profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=78420075

ABOUT THE FILM:

When EVERYONE believes they are doing RIGHT, how can so much go WRONG? In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, America suffered the worst domesticated animal crisis in its history. Tens of thousands of house pets were left to perish in neighborhoods all across the gulf….

Tom McPhee went to Gonzales, Louisiana not knowing how he’d help, just knowing he needed to help somehow. He volunteered at Lamar Dixon Expo Center and by chance found himself spending the next four days taking picture after picture of thousands of house pets rescued from flooded New Orleans. Over the next 18 months Tom would document this unparalleled historic event as it unfolded, trying to understand where it all went wrong. An American Opera is an unflinching, operatic vision of what happened to the people of New Orleans who were forced to evacuate without their beloved pets…

12/12/07: The state may be without power for two weeks in some locations. President Bush has declared Oklahoma a federal disaster area: www.cnn.com/2007/US/weather/12/12/winter.storm.ap/index.html

From an animal standpoint:

- Rescues and animal clinics/boarding facilities without power looking for generators (many animals are ill or young).

- Few places to board dogs that are not already full, as many boarding facilities without power.

- Homeowners asking for locations to board their animals as they may be without for a time.

- Strays in ice storm being reported, with no one available to assist nor any place to take them.

HOW TO HELP ANIMALS

12/16/07 UPDATE: Snow bypassed most of Oklahoma and forecast is excellent the next few days. However, power is still out to many homeowners…

1. Floods Plague Pacific Northwest

OREGON AND WASHINGTON STATE
www.cnn.com/2007/US/weather/12/05/winter.storms.ap/index.html

FLOOD OVERVIEW

Last week’s severe flooding in the Pacific Northwest states of Washington and Oregon killed at least seven people and left behind flooded homes, fallen trees and washed-out roads, including the region’s largest highway.

On Wednesday (12/5/07), the storm continued pushing east, dumping snow across the Midwest… Damage could be in the billions of dollars, Gov. Chris Gregoire said… At least 300 people had been rescued by helicopters from the Navy, Coast Guard, National Guard and other agencies, and flights continued in what Gregoire described as the state’s largest aerial search-and-rescue operation in a decade…

MASON & LEWIS COUNTIES, WASHINGTON STATE
EXCERPTS FROM A FLOOD, PASADO’S SAFE HAVEN
www.pasadosafehaven.org/HOMEPAGE/12_FLOOD/Flood.htm

A group of Pasado’s rescuers deployed to Lewis County this week to lend a helping hand to those in need. Most rescuers had successfully helped Pasado’s Safe Haven rescue over 1200 animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. What they saw in Lewis County looked all too familiar — the complete destruction and devastation that water and mud can create…

PORTLAND, OREGON
OREGON HUMANE SOCIETY [link]

12/6/07, AP — Oregon Humane Society has taken more than a dozen dogs from a Chehalis, Wash. animal shelter to make room for pets injured by the storms there. Rising waters submerged much of Chehalis under several feet of water. The Chehalis facility itself is on dry ground and remains open to receive animals and reunite them with their owners. But it is expecting an influx of animals and needed room. Oregon Humane Society expects to treat the animals and find them homes. The organization has also delivered thousands of pounds of pet food to flood-ravaged Tillamook and Vernonia along the Oregon coast.

5. CAT Helps Victims In Flood Ravaged Vernonia

VERNONIA, OREGON
CAT & WASHINGTON COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES
www.catadoptionteam.org/cat/adoption/team/390

12/6/07 — Responding to a request from American Red Cross, Washington County Animal Services in Hillsboro and Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood rallied to provide dog and cat food as well as crates and other supplies for pet owners of Vernonia.

Flood waters of the Nehalem River are retreating and residents of this small community are just beginning to assess damage. Vernonia was cut off from the rest of the state earlier in the week as torrential rains and winds not only caused flooding but landslides blocking access to Columbia County town.

CAT provided over three pallets of dog and cat food as well as medium-sized crates and thousands of pet food bowls for Red Cross to distribute to pet owners affected by this disaster. Washington County Animal Services gathered and transported supplies to the staging area for the Oregon Trail Chapter of the Red Cross. They estimate over 4000 pounds of pet food was sent.

SpayMart is a 501c3 all-volunteer organization based in New Orleans. SpayMart also has a facility in Picayune, MS, for (currently) 300 cats rescued after Katrina. Lynn Chiche, president, GREATLY needs extra hands to care for cats and would appreciate ANY amount of time anyone can donate! Just one day would be appreciated. LAKEVIEW CATS ROAMING

Kathy Sweeney, kathybsweeney [at] yahoo.com * Jeanette Althans, jalthans [at] cox.net
www.lakeviewcats.org

Jeanette Althans, jalthans [at] chnola.org — Kathy Sweeney and I still have ongoing needs in Lakeview. We can use help with feeding, but our most important needs involve trapping, fostering, and adopting. Please visit www.lakeviewcats.org regularly.

There are several litters of kittens that need to be trapped and taken off the street, along with unaltered adults that need TNR. Kathy and I typically trap 4 - 6 cats each week. These cats are brought to ARNO for spay/neuter, and released the next day. However, we desperately need fosters and people willing to adopt kittens. In October we trapped three 5 week old kittens. They were little spitfires for the first few days. Kathy helped me tame them down, and they turned out so very sweet. They are in a foster home in Baton Rouge and are up for adoption through ARNO. We named them after streets in Lakeview: Fleur de Lis, Hammond, and Harrison.

There are several more litters that we need to trap and take off the street, and we are looking for foster and forever homes for these kittens. Also, there are several friendly “Katrina” cats left in Lakeview who deserve forever homes. They have been living on the street for over 2 years and crave human attention.

PLEASE FOSTER OR ADOPT AN OUTDOOR (OR INDOOR) LAKEVIEW KITTY CONTACT: Kathy Sweeney, kathybsweeney [at] yahoo.com

Jeanette Althans, jalthans [at] cox.net

FOSTER / ADOPT:
Fosters and forever homes are needed for the following types of cats and kittens who still live in devastated areas…
— Friendly adult cats who survived Katrina and are still left on the streets (fosters needed while we search for owners).
— Adult cats who survived Katrina and are still very scared. These cats need a little extra attention until they adjust.
— Kittens of various ages (2 months to 8 months); some need extra handling until they adjust.

Many of the cats on the street were former pets and are now very scared. It is possible that some of the kitties can be re-socialized in a stable environment with steady human contact. Please help!

Lakeview Cats Roaming was created for the cats still roaming in Lakeview since Hurricane Katrina. Kathy Sweeney and Jeanette Althans coordinate the feeding, trapping, and reunion efforts. INDEPENDENT FOOD/WATER VOLUNTEERS

Maria Alvarez, tipster [at] bellsouth.net

Katrina’s left-behind, and their 4th and 5th generation offspring, are still wandering under-populated parts of New Orleans, looking for food and comfort. Volunteer feeder Maria Alvarez has 60+ animals at her home whom she cares for out-of-pocket. Adoptions are few and far between…

In a single evening, NOLA volunteer Kim Johnson worked 6 addresses and set 18 traps. She wound up with 13 adult cats, 1 kitten and 2 opossums!

Donated food is needed at various addresses, to help feeders who cover food/water stations there. Please give what you can for NOLA animals left to fend for themselves.

ONE NOLA VOLUNTEER’S OVERVIEW
From: NOLA Cats - nolacats [at] gmail.com

I am feeding one route right now, and in 2 weeks I will be feeding two routes because that person is leaving town. To cover these two routes, I’ll use about 330 pounds of food a week. This is how much I need donated, just to cover my feeding of two routes. I estimate I am feeding approximately 280 cats on these two routes.

One route is about 75% spayed/neutered; the second route is only some 10% spayed/neutered. On ONE feeding route, I asked a couple residents how many people they knew who lost a pet during Katrina, and they estimated 25%.

Donations of cat food are greatly needed. Ideally, 20-lb or 40-lb bags of cat food. A small amount of kitten food would be useful too.

5. Katrina Custody Case: Woman Who Lost Dog Appeals TX Ruling

2007-11-24 - Kinship Circle - Thanksgiving Hope For Homeless 04

PHOTO: This 10-year-old cocker spaniel was in the middle of a custody case between a New Orleans resident and an Austin resident. Jazz was lost by her family in the chaos of Hurricane Katrina, and she was brought to an Austin shelter. She was adopted by Tiffany Madura and renamed Hope. Another woman, Shalanda Augillard, claimed Jazz was her dog. She claimed rescue workers stole her dog when Jazz was left behind during Hurricane Katrina.

HAYS COUNTY, TEXAS
Woman Who Lost Dog In Katrina Appeals Texas Ruling Of Dog Custody Case

Lawyers representing Shalanda Augillard, the New Orleans-area woman who lost her fight to have her dog returned to her in a Hays County court earlier this summer, have announced they are appealing the District Court’s ruling. This is the first case that has gone to trial in which an owner of a dog lost in Katrina was denied the return of her pet.

Augillard said, “I put my faith in the justice system, and it failed me. I know without a doubt that the dog in Texas is Jazz. I love my dog, and all I want is to bring Jazz home.”

According to attorney Susan Philips, who represented Augillard in the case, the outcome was incomprehensible, given the uncontroverted and overwhelming evidence that Jazz is indeed Augillard’s dog.

“A noted DNA expert, Dr. Joy Halverson, testified that, ‘with scientific certainty, I can unequivocally say the DNA samples came from the same dog,’” Philips said. “At the outset of the case, we were confident that the court would return Jazz to Augillard. We thought that the quickest way to get Jazz home was to file suit in Texas, in Hays County, which is where the dog was being held. Because the judge limited the trial to four hours, we didn’t have the opportunity to present our case. We were stunned by the judge’s decision.”

She added, “Since Jazz is now ten years old, it is imperative that we continue to pursue this case at all levels and hopefully reunite her with Augillard before it’s too late.”

The Katrina Animal Reunion Team (KART) was founded by a small group of very experienced volunteers whose goal is to assist shelters and individuals still caring for Katrina rescues. Our members include some Gulf Coast residents who are in a position to go to addresses where a particular animal was found to locate possible owners. They talk to neighbors, post flyers, etc. They can also assess the situation to which a pet might return to and assist in verifying ownership. Transportation funds are still available.

9. Historic Court Arguments For Animals, Louisiana - Dec. 3

LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
SAVE LAFAYETTE PETS / COMPANION ANIMAL NETWORK
Garo Alexanian, SaveLafayettePets [at] CompanionAnimalNetworkTV.org

Companion Animal Network has taken “the worst of the worst” municipality for animals in the state of Louisiana, in our opinion, to court. The court case regards documents Lafayette parish refused to provide to us, 13 litigants in all, which we requested. Lafayette is 2 hours north west of New Orleans. They are obligated by the Records Access Law of Louisiana to provide them, but because they have probably been killing animals in violation of local, state and/or federal rules, regulations, and laws they are unwilling to give us the documents as they would be giving us the evidence with which we would be “hanging” them politically, legally and in the media.

Oral arguments have been set for December 3, at 9 AM at the Lafayette Courthouse located at 800 South Buchanan Avenue, in the courtroom of Judge Herman Clause, 15th District.

IF YOU DON’T DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR ANIMALS PLEASE ATTEND THE ORAL ARGUMENTS.

Having 30-40 people makes a BIG difference to the judge as opposed to an empty courtroom. Plus, we need media. With a lot of people we will obtain it… Already, as a result of “word” about our lawsuit getting out, Caddo Parish, which also had a long history of horrendous animal control policies and administration, has told us in a letter from their parish attorney they do not want to end up getting sued in the same manner as Lafayette and they are immediately making as many changes as feasible and to give them “time.”

…This is EXACTLY what is going to happen in ALL the neighboring parishes if we win the law suit against Lafayette. THIS IS THE BROWN V BOARD OF EDUCATION TYPE HISTORIC CASE ON BEHALF OF ANIMALS IN THE SOUTH !

Animals torn apart in gas chambers because young and old, cat and dog, are all put together at the same time — in violation of AVMA and HSUS recommended protocols, and perhaps even state law — NEED YOU TO APPEAR AND REPRESENT THEM. You can now speak for tens of thousands of wonderful, loyal, human-loving dead dogs and cats who were tortured by Lafayette parish for all these years. This has taken one year to get in front of the court.

To read the correspondences between us and the “disingenuous” responses we received from Lafayette pursuant to our Records Request go to: www.CompanionAnimalNetworkTV.org/Lafayette.html

To read our legal paperwork which will be argued in court go to: www.companionanimalnetworktv.org/Lafayette%20Law%20Suit.html

10. Manhattan Borough President Awards Katrina Animal Rescuer

MANHATTAN & NEW ORLEANS
HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUISIANA
Contact Persons: Jeff Dorson, 901-268-4432, stopcruelty11 [at] gmail.com
Courtney Chandel, 347-515-8225

In an award presentation recently held in New York City in anticipation of the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer presented Courtney Chandel with two awards for her work during the 2005 storm season. First, Borough President Stringer presented Ms. Chandel with the “Golden Heart” award given on behalf of the Humane Society of Louisiana, a New Orleans-based organization that continues to recognize volunteers from around the country who came to their city and state’s aid during the aftermath of Katrina.

Ms. Chandel, a registered nurse and seasoned animal rescuer, visited Louisiana on two occasions to assist in difficult animal rescue operations in and around the City of New Orleans, weeks after Katrina laid waste to the parish. 80% of the city flooded after Katrina’s storm surge caused several levees to breach. Thousands of residents and their pets were trapped in the city and outlying areas, with no way to escape the rising waters.

Ms. Chandel and other volunteers from around the country teamed up with the MuttShack Foundation, an animal protection agency that operated one of the largest animal recovery outposts in the city, that would make dangerous forays in to the city in search of lost and abandoned animals. During one search and rescue mission, Ms. Chandel and her rescue partner traveled into Gentilly, a dangerous neighborhood especially hard hit by the levee breach, and where shootings were a common occurrence even after the storm — and stayed overnight in a resident’s attic of an abandoned and nearly-destroyed home (were temperatures exceeded 100 degrees) — in order to locate and retrieve a traumatized cat.

Ms. Chandel eventually caught the cat, Violet, and returned her to her owner, who had previously evacuated to New York City, and where the former resident has decided to live permanently. Overall, Ms. Chandel gave aid and relief to dozens of stricken animals and showed great courage and determination in her efforts to help animals in distress.

“We would like to honor the thousands upon thousands of volunteers who risked their personal safety and spent their personal funds to assist our efforts in helping our city and state recover from our nation’s worst natural disaster. Since it is impossible to give awards to each deserving individual, we can only pick a few to represent the many. We believe that Courtney’s actions symbolize what thousands of others did — they helped us during our greatest time of need and they did it without expecting anything in return,” says Jeff Dorson, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, a charitable animal protection agency that operated the Safe House for Abused Animals in Algiers, a suburb of New Orleans, fifteen minutes from the Superdome.

The group’s shelter was destroyed by Katrina’s heavy rains and hurricane force winds, but the organization hopes to return to the city and reestablish many of its humane programs and services in the near future. Twenty-four hours before Katrina landed, the group evacuated to a barren four-acre plot of land in Tylertown, Mississippi, where they created an emergency evacuation center, which is still in operation.

Mr. Stringer also presented Ms. Chandel with a mounted “key” to the City of New Orleans. “We wanted to let Courtney and other animal rescuers know that our state will be forever indebted to them and that the door to our city shall remain open to them,” says Dorson, explaining the significance of the second award. Mr. Stringer, not to be outdone by the officials from the Humane Society, also declared August 14, as “Courtney Chandel Day throughout the Borough of Manhattan.” This is the first time, in modern times, that an animal rescuer has been honored with this type of city-wide proclamation.

When informed of binging nominated and then chosen to receive the prestigious award from the Humane Society, Ms. Chandel said, said that after experiencing the tremendous outpouring of support from all over the world and from other states after September 11, “Helping out Louisiana was a real privilege. To help animals is to help people, because people care about the welfare of animals.”

The Humane Society of Louisiana has also created a Katrina Pet Memorial Committee, which is comprised of 20 individuals from around the country who are raising funds to create a commemorative statue to honor the lives of pets lost during Katrina. Ms. Chandel also serves on this committee. The committee has commissioned a life-size statue to be sculpted by Mr. Richard Chashoudian, a resident of Baton Rouge. The statue, known as the Katrina Pet Memorial Statue, will be a cat and dog cast in bronze and will symbolize the tens of thousands of animals that lost their lives during Katrina.

The statue will be formally presented to the New Orleans City Council on or Around the 3rd anniversary of Katrina (August 29, 2008). A rally and reception for all animal responders who participated in the 2005 storm recovery will be held in conjunction with the unveiling of the statue.
